Girls Review: All About Adam

Throughout the first season of Girls, we've followed the trials and tribulations of Hannah's romantic relationship with oddball Adam. In "Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too" we get to explore the next level of Hannah and Adam's relationship, and boy did we really learn a lot!

I truly don't think we would have gotten to this point if Adam hadn't called Hannah out last week on how she was using him. To refresh everyone's memory, he basically said that she got mad for not knowing things about him when truly she'd never even asked. She used him to have sex and to bitch about her workday and nothing more.

Adam Dates Hanna

Now that these two have solidified their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend, it's ON. It also couldn't come at a worse time for Marnie, but we'll get to her in a minute. There's something to be said for a show that opens with a shot of Trojan Magnum wrappers, used condoms and empty peanut butter jars; way to set the scene!

I think as much as it probably grossed a few people out, especially hearing their dirty talk through the wall, it also set a very distinct tone for Adam and Hannah. It was very uniquely them. That's what I believe Girls does so well. Then you have Marnie crying through the wall as she repeatedly stalks photos of Charlie on Facebook... while listening to Demi Lovato. It's raw and it's real. Even though Marnie once compared Charlie's touch to a "weird uncle" she doesn't want to be alone and she's not ready to see him as happy as he is. Break ups suck.

Since Hannah is on cloud nine, she forgets that she's promised to spend the day comforting Jessa for losing her job. Honestly, it doesn't seem like Jessa needs much comforting; she's pretty self sufficient and always manages to make it on her own. In a turn of events, Jessa ends up comforting Marnie and gets Marnie to admit her biggest insecurities. On a sidenote, it was nice of Adam to briefly comfort Marnie since it's clearly these two don't mesh that well.

This isn't fun for me being the uptight girl. I hate it. | permalink

A pep talk and a few martinis later, Marnie and Jessa are on their way to guest star Chris O'Dowd's apartment. Sufficiently drunk and hellbent on proving she isn't uptight, Marnie kisses Jessa, igniting a brief girl on girl makeout sesh. Jessa is open to it, Marnie is challenging herself to do something different. Chris O'Down just wants IN. Then they accidentally spill some wine on his 10K carpet (seriously?) and he freaks the eff out. Basically the speech that O'Dowd unleashes on Jessa and Marnie is pretty much what I imagine every hater of the show Girls to be saying.

Needless to say, O'Dowd does not get his threesome. In another kinky turn, Hannah does get peed on in the shower. Aside from the shower piss scenario, (John Slattery on Sex and the City anyone?) Hannah and Adam are definitely in some sort of harmony. I'm happy because Hannah seems happy, but I can't help but notice that Adam displays some manic behavior. He has intense mood swings and his attention is all over the place. I am obviously not a therapist, but I've heard many people make this same observation so I thought it was worth pointing it out.

What do you guys think about Adam's mood swings? Are he and Hannah in a good place? Is Marnie really that uptight? Where was Shoshanna? Wtill recovering from the crack? Hit the comments and let us know what you thought of this week's Girls!

Girls Review: Who is the Wound?

When inputting my quotes from the latest installment of Girls, I noticed that a lot of the notable one liners came from Marnie. In "Leave Me Alone," she and Hannah had their most epic fight to date, even worse than the time Marnie doused Hannah in a drink and called her a bitch.

What led these two besties into harsh territory? Well, it seems that Hannah and Marnie had been feeling resentful towards each other for awhile. All it took to get the fight moving was a trigger.

Hannah & Marie Spot Her Professor

The trigger in this case was an old nemesis of Hannah's named Tally Schifrin. Tally's the kind of girl who is all about the success and not afraid to rub it in your face. Obviously this is not someone who would mesh well with Hannah. Especially because Tally has the one kind of success that Hannah really wants: recognition for her writing.

Enter guest star Michael Imperioli, known to many as Christopher Moltisanti from The Sopranos. I love when HBO keeps it in the family! As Hannah's former writing professor and crush, she was thrilled when Imperioli agreed Tally was a crappy writer and invited Hannah to read a piece at a workshop. I would've liked to hear her piece on the hoarder.

Maybe it's "trivial" as Ray said, but not everything that's written has to be some stone cold moving piece about a really serious topic. People need humor and entertainment in life! Also, who the hell takes Ray's advice?!? He runs a place called "Cafe Grumpy," which might as well be his alter ego.

I feel like this episode was kind of a wake up call. A lot of it was about going after you really want, or at least admitting what you really want. Whether it was creating an Internet dating profile for Shoshanna or Jessa's old boss very honest talk with her, it felt like everyone was taking off their rose colored glasses and just hoping for things to change.

Katherine made a great point to Jessa about distracting ourselves from the person we might end up being because it might not be who we pictured when we were 16. I love Jessa's character for being so whimsical and not taking everything so seriously, but I understand what Katherine is saying.

I think Marnie and Hannah are definitely experiencing some growing pains as well. Hannah wants to be taken more seriously as a writer after Tally's party so she took Ray's advice and Marnie is just fed up with everything. Their fight at the end was frighteningly real from the point of view of this 26-year old girl. I sat there kind of holding my breath because I couldn't believe how honest these two were to each other's faces.

Marnie and Hannah said a lot of things tonight, some I'm sure they didn't mean, some I'm sure they did. What did you think of their fight? What do you expect on next week's finale? Hit the comments!

Girls Review: The Mystery Party

It's not very often that a show can make me gasp out loud and scream "WHAT" at the television screen... so tonight's episode was something I certainly did not see coming. In a true testament to Lena Dunham's writing, the Girls Season 1 finale, "She Did," proved that Dunhan can keep an audience guessing.

Obviously this is the part where I tell whoever has not seen the episode to STOP READING because things are going to get spoilery...

Hannah and Adam

Jessa got married...to Chris O'Dowd's character Thomas. Yes, the same guy who called her a spoiled brat just a few weeks ago.

If you need a quick refresher, Thomas is the rich dude who picked up Marnie in a bar and brought her home with Jessa under the assumption that there would be a threesome. After some exploratory liplocking between Marnie and Jessa, there was some wine spilled on an expensive rug and Thomas went batsh*t. Obviously, I wasn't exactly expecting his return.

As far as Jessa, if this first season has taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected when it comes to the free-spirited British beauty. When Shoshanna told Marnie that Jessa had been AWOL, it wasn't a far guess to think perhaps she had shacked up with a new guy and was in some blissed out honeymoon phase. In fact, a quickie wedding wouldn't have even been that surprising.

When everyone was called to attention it seemed like a wedding was plausible, but suddenly Thomas popped up on the screen, Marnie's face dropped and, boom, there was the twist. Let me just ask, though: if a guy flipped out about wine being spilled on his $10K rug, how is he going to live with such a free spirit like Jessa? He seemed pretty uptight to me. I also am not really sure what is going through Jessa's head.

I think she freaked out after that talk with Katherine on the previous Girls episode and there is way more going on emotionally than we are aware of. Maybe she did fall in love in a week? Would it surprise me? Not really. Would it surprise me if season two opened with Jessa already divorced? Not really. Like I said, expect the unexpected.

I might get a lot of disagreement, but I think Jessa has at least rubbed off on Marnie in a good way. That girl needed to just chill out. You would think living with Shoshanna would help loosen her up, too, but not quite. Buy hey! It brought her and Ray together and I think these two could work. Shoshanna probably got the most screen time she's gotten all season and I'm finally interested in where her storyline is going.

Hannah's storyline left the most up in the air. To be honest, if I woke up on the subway, missing my purse, having no clue where I was, I don't think I would go sit on the beach and eat wedding cake. Then again, what was that fight with Adam? Her feelings are clearly all over the place! It was easy to see both sides of this verbal throwdown. I really don't think she was any less into him, especially if these last two episodes showed us anything.

I'm not gonna say that Adam didn't have a valid point when he said, "Is this the game? You chase me like I’m in the f*cking Beatles for six months, and then when I finally get comfortable with things you wanna shrug?" For more line, go to our Girls quotes section.

Whether or not Adam is right, that situation really rang true. What did you all think? Did you love this episode as much as I did? Are you excited for season two? Hit the comments!

Patrick Wilson to Romance Hannah on Girls

Adam is out. And it looks like multiple options will be in for Hannah on Girls Season 2.

With Donald Glover already on board as a rumored love interest for Lena Dunham's controversial character, TV Line now reports that Patrick Wilson (A Gifted Man) will play a pivotal role next year on Girls:

The veteran actor will portray Joshua, an older doctor who resides next door to where Hannah works and becomes closely involved with the confused 24-year old.

Shiri Appleby has signed on to make life miserable for Hannah on season two of Girls. Sort of.

The former Life UnExpected star will recur on this HBO comedy as a new love interest for Hannah's ex, Adam, according to Deadline. Her character is described as "charming" and as someone who adores Adam despite - how shall we put this? - his unusual sexual proclivities.

Of course, Lena Dunham's confused main character is expected to see some action on Season 2 herself.

Patrick Wilson will come on board as a doctor who lives next door to Hannah, while Community's Donald Glover has been spotted shooting scenes for at least one upcoming episode.

Girls has added a pair of familiar faces to its Season 2 roster.

First, multiple outlets confirm that Rita Wilson (most recently seen on The Good Wife) will come on board as the mother to Allison Williams's upright and gorgeous Marnie. It's unclear for how many episodes.

And it's even more unclear just what role Colin Quinn will take on, but the former Weekend Update anchor will appear on at least one episode of the HBO comedy.

When Girls Season 2 kicks off on January 13, Hanna Horvath will have her life totally together. Almost. Kind.

Okay, probably not at all.

The first extended HBO trailer does feature Lena Dunham's character wondering if her ex is an actual murderer.

And now the network has released a new poster in honor of the mega hit, zeroing on on Hanna's eye and including a tagline which is far too perfect for this Emmy-nominated comedy:

Girls Review: Housewarming

In an ideal way to welcome us in Girls Season 2, Hannah and ex-boyfriend-turned-gay-best friend Elijah hosted an awesome, awkward housewarming soiree.

Yes, "It's About Time" was the perfect was to get reacquainted with our favorite girls.

Well, with everyone except for Jessa, who only made a brief appearance at the end of the half hour when she returned from her honeymoon after her whirlwind courtship with Thomas John (Chris O'Dowd.)

Girls Season 2 Premiere Pic

In the season one finale of Girls Hannah and Adam had a major blow up about their relationship right before he got hit by a truck.

Despite being so pissed off he wouldn't let Hannah get in the ambulance, he had no problem with her being his primary caregiver here. The problem is that Hannah - after "chasing him like he was the f*cking Beatles for six months" - is no longer interested and pretty much wants nothing to do with him. She's changing his bedpan (ewwww)! out of guilt, but it seems like their weird sexual relationship has finally met its demise.

Instead, Hannah has moved on to the beloved Donald Glover from Community. Glover plays a Republican named Sandy, who has a hard time chasing Hannah around a store when he has a boner. I would love to know what "Troy and Abed in the Morning" would have to say about this. It's also good to know that Lena Dunham is still completely comfortable getting naked onscreen despite the copious amounts of public commentary on Lena's nudity.

Unsurprisingly, Marnie is not as comfortable. Then again, she was involved in one of the most awkward sex scenes I've ever watched, and I've seen A LOT. Then again when you are wasted and attempting to have sex with your best friend's gay ex boyfriend, stuff is going to get weird. Cue the erectile dysfunction, eye rolling, awkward coverups and Andrew Rannells' tush.

Now that Marnie has been laid off, I see her on a very lost path, which could result in some really interesting things for our resident uptight girl. The part of her mother was perfectly cast, with Rita Wilson at the helm telling Marnie she looked too skinny. Agreed.

I had a bad breakup. It's okay I think we're gonna be able stay friends you know, but I'm not gonna do what Hannah does and order 6 pizzas to make myself feel better. | permalink

Marnie may be lost, but my God, she should not be crawling into Charlie's bed. She's done enough damage sleeping with Hannah's ex, she needed to just call it a night. If I were Charlie's new girlfriend I would flip out.

Lastly, mark my words, I totally think this is going to be Shoshanna's season. Last year she was pretty much a background character except for that one time she smoked crack and was running through Brooklyn bottomless. Shoshanna seems to have found her voice. I love the fact that she showed up to the party in a fascinator and kinda looked like she was in mourning, which she was: for her virginity.

She and Ray are both a little off and I actually dig their dynamic. I predict a funnier and more involved Shosh this season.

Aside from missing Jessa, this was a great return episode for Girls. In a case of "the more things change, the more they stay the same," I think it's going to be a really interesting season and having Elijah in the mix adds some serious entertainment.

Sidenote: if anyone knows who played the acoustic version of my favorite Bruce Springsteen song "I'm Going Down" in the credits, please message, tweet me, or leave it in the comments. Thanks!

A lot went down on the Girls season 2 premiere, but unfortunately "I Get Ideas" was slacking.

Things really didn't get engaging until the end of the episode when the Adam and Hannah drama went down. You know, when she accidentally called 911!

Hannah and Jemma

Oh Hannah, don't you know you can't just call 911 unless you're having an actual emergency?? If you want your ex-boyfriend to stop texting you start by asking him and cutting off contact. Take back your key, don't let him in for "snuggle and milk" time. Maybe before calling up the "PoPo," as Adam would say, call your cell service provider? I may or may not have had to make this call for a close friend of mine a few times. Aren't that what best friends are for?

Best friends are probably NOT for sleeping with your gay ex, but, hey it happens. George (aka Pauly Shore's twin) was just not having any of that. It's interesting that he was saying Elijah's too young and immature when George was the one who was acting like a drunken teenager last week. Not that it was any excuse for Elijah's cheating but still... don't say his immaturity is the reason.

I'm torn between Elijah not wanting to tell Hannah and Marnie wanting to tell her. Both have valid points. Usually honesty is the best policy but Elijah is right that Hannah will take it so personally and make it about her when truly it was a blip of a moment that happened when two people were not in their right minds. Or as Elijah said: 3 pumps, 2 and half pumps before he lost his boner.

Between Elijah's break up, Adam's stalking, and Sandy and Hannah breaking up over his political views and him not liking her essay (be real Hannah, the essay was totally the reason) the only healthy dating couple on this show right now is Shoshanna and Ray! Seriously, was their conversation about bathing a pig one of the weirdest yet oddly intimate moments you've ever seen? I think the only better line was when Hannah dropped a Missy Elliot lyric and pretended not to realize it.

Why don't you lay this thing down, flip it, and reverse it because I don't think it's very nice. | permalink

I referred to Ray and Shoshanna as the healthy "dating" couple because of course Jessa and Thomas John are now married! Thomas was rocking that fedora and Jessa was actually pregnant during filming and it was sorta impossible to cover up. She looks great either way and Jessa seems really happy and complacent. Then again, if my new husband bought me three puppies I'd be ecstatic too! Not sure how I feel about the names Garbage, F*cker, and Hanukah though...

Also great call on Elijah's part that Marnie looked like a slutty Von Trapp child in her new uniform. So dead on and perfect! While I didn't love the episode overall, I do think it had its moments. What did you all think of this week's Girls?

Girls: Renewed for Season 3!

All it took were a pair of Girls Season 2 episodes for HBO to deliver the verdict: this Lena Dunham vehicle has been renewed for Season 3!

Hannah Pic

While HBO is yet to comment on her exchange with Alec Baldwin on the latter's "Here's the Thing" podcast this week, Dunham told her fellow actor that she is "starting season three at the end of March."

And it may be comprised of 12 episodes instead of 10.

"I would love that," she said. "I think that a little more would be just a little more storytelling real estate, and it would be amazing."

We'll update this post with the network's official announcement when it comes in.

Girls Review: Living in Hannah's World

$

It's all fun and games until you find out that you best friend slept with your gay ex boyfriend. On this week's party-tastic episode of Girls that's exactly what happened when Elijah finally slipped up and admited he slept with Marnie.

So who's the "Bad Friend" now?

Happy Hannah Horvath

Hannah finally got a paid writing gig, which is not an easy thing in this world, that much I know. I also know that though this episode was filmed at the club Greenhouse in NYC and that those are not the real bathrooms at Greenhouse. But that's neither here nor there.

In a slightly shady but really aggressive move, Hannah took a gig for a website called Jazzhate that I'm pretty sure is run by Adam Sandler's ex fiancee from The Wedding Singer. The motto of the site is "the magic happens just outside your comfort zone." When Hannah rejected the idea of having a threesome with some people she met on Craigslist, went for option B: try a ton of cocaine and write about it.

Obviously Elijah was more than happy to take this journey with her. He got to spend a night partying with his best friend and best roommate ever. Andrew Andrew DJed and Hannah exchanged shirts in the middle of the club to put on some dude's yellow mesh tank top, nipples splayed to the world. In real life, she would likely be kicked out for public nudity, but we'll suspend reality for the purpose of the show.

I'm not at all surprised that Elijah ended up being the one who slipped up about him and Marnie, even though he was the one who begged Marnie not to tell. By the way, did anyone catch the hilariously young photo of Andrew Rannells on his Colorado license? Amazing. I am surprised, however, that Hannah hooked up with the junkie Laird from her building. Although, truthfully, should anything that Hannah does shock us anymore? Probably not.

Booth Jonathan, aka Jorma Taccone from The Lonely Island, finally got to fulfill his Girls season 1 promise to Marnie: have sex with her. After seeing her in her slutty Von Trapp uniform, who could resist? Marnie gushed over his kinda freaky art, including a panic attack inducing pod of televisions and they finally got it on while he made her stare at a doll. Whatever floats your boat, Marnie.

It's too bad Hannah showed up to confront her about being a bad friend or her night would've been perfect. Not much Shoshanna and Jessa this week but the rest of the episode definitely made up for their absence. I can't stop listening to the Iconapop song "I Love It" from the club. This week also showcased my favorite quote of the season so far.

It's a Wednesday night baby and I'm alive! | permalink

Something about Hannah's perfect delivery of that line just makes it that much better. What did you all think of this week's episode of Girls? Best one of the season or did you miss Shosh and Jessa? Hit the comments!

Girls Review: Dinner Party From Hell

Coming off of "Bad Friend" - which was a pretty fun and amusing episode of Girls - we hit an emotional spot this week. In "It's a Shame About Ray," Hannah hosted a dinner party that ignited all sorts of troubles, particularly for Marnie and Shoshanna.

Meanwhile, Jessa was off at her own disastrous meal with her new in-laws, who were not invited to her wedding.

Jessa at Dinner

It was only a matter of time before the odd couple otherwise known as Jessa and Thomas John hit their first real marital rough patch. She's a free spirit and he's an uptight finance guy and they got married on a whim after hating each other and then hooking up for a few weeks. Did you think the first time she met his parents would go well?

It doesn't matter how well Jessa behaved when dealing with a duo like that. Actually, it was really just Thomas John's mother as his father seemed particularly enthralled by our resident Brit. While maybe I wouldn't tell my new in-laws that I went to rehab for snorting heroin, I do admire Jessa's firm stance on not hiding who she is. Isn't that why Thomas married her? She has no reason to hide her life experience just for some disapproving stiff.

Their fight was equal parts mean and hilarious. The description of his apartment as a set from gay Entourage and how she tells people he was born a test tube baby to make him more interesting was entertaining. Also, hookers don't respect you Thomas, you're a moron.

I'm a miracle. I'm a unicorn. I'm a f*cking needle in the haystack and you're just some f*cking dumb hipster who's munching my hay! | permalink

Meanwhile, across town, Hannah was hosting her post-Elijah pad thai party. It's interesting that Charlie still attends all of her parties when Marnie is her best friend. Well, it's interesting to me but certainly not to Audrey. I can't believe Charlie told her about Marnie begging to crawl into bed with him when she was sad. I also can't believe Charlie tried to kiss Marnie on the roof! I don't blame Audrey for leaving when he went after her.

A few things I loved:

  • Shoshanna and Ray admitting they were in love with each other on the subway platform.
  • I LOVED that Hannah stood up for Marnie even if they're fighting. That's what it means to be a best friend. You have someone's back no matter what.
  • The use of Oasis "Wonderwall" as the ending song.
What did you think of this week's episode of Girls? What's more disgusting: peeing in a tub or snot rocketing in a tub? Will Jessa and Thomas John get back together? Hit the comments!

Patrick Wilson debuts this Sunday on Girls, and it doesn't take long for the actor to make an impression.

We then see Hannah slink over to his apartment, only to initially claim she isn't going inside because he could be Ted Bundy. But then, well, you see... it's a really nice brownstone.

Girls Review: Hannah Plays House

It seems like once a season we're going to have an episode of Girls that stars only our main character, writer and director, Lena Dunham.

In Girls season 1 it was when Hannah went home to Michigan. On "One Man's Trash," meanwhile, we watched Hannah have a fling with a sexy older guest star, Patrick Wilson.

The episode did give us a brief clip of Ray flipping out at Grumpy's, but that's just Ray being the usual cranky Ray.

The Man for Hannah

Hannah meets Joshua (Wilson) when he comes into Grumpy's to lodge a complaint about someone using his trash bins. Obviously it was Hannah because she lost her dumpster key and is afraid to tell Ray. Wouldn't you with his attitude?

Despite not even knowing his name, Hannah goes into Joshua's home to confess.

I could really be putting myself in a Ted Bundy situation. He also looked handsome, clean...and probably had a brownstone. Okay. | permalink

The result of her confession is a two-day fling completely in the confines of Joshua's beautiful brownstone. He's 42 and she's 24. He's separated but seems to have a stable, really well built life and a very adult house (to say the least.) This is obviously not what Hannah's used to when it comes to guys. Naturally she's attracted to him, because let's be honest: Hannah is attracted to most guys. I mean, she slept with the Laird, the building junkie, just a few weeks ago.

Even though all we watched was this 48-hour affair, there was definitely a lot of subtext. The way Hannah interacted when finally faced with a stable guy who wants her to stay over with him was interesting. She wanted to be begged. Something about being with a guy who was fairly uncomplicated made her have a whole mess of realizations.

Mainly that something is broken inside of her. Really she just wants to feel everything and be loved and not feel so damn lonely. Joshua just wanted a girl to literally come in off the street who he could drink wine with, bang on his ping pong table and look at the moonlight with.

As it goes with flings, it came to an end. When Hannah crossed the line from fun to neurotic, that put a damper on everything. Then again, if I just fainted in a steam room I'd probably be feeling like a disoriented mess a little bit. Nice meeting you Joshua, and good riddance.

What did you think of this week's episode of Girls? Did you enjoy Hannah's brief affair? What do you think prompted her freak out? Did you miss the other girls?

Girls Review: Little Women

While last week's controversial episode of Girls was centered only around Hannah and her fling Joshua, all the characters were back for "Boys." And while the girls were indulging in and experiencing some adult things, this episode really just served to show how UN-adult they all are.

Also, Marnie apparently thought she was starring in Zoolander and not an episode of Girls. She looked weirdly hot, but that ensemble was purely Derelicte.

Marnie and Booth

Did anyone think for one second that Booth was asking her to co-host the party? He blatantly and clearly asked "will you host for me?" Did Marnie actually like Booth or do you think she was more attracted to his artist lifestyle and his work?

As much as I was thinking "oy, Marnie no," and was pissed at how superior she was acting to Hannah, the truth is they're all self-involved because that's my generation. Hannah was rambling on about her book when Jessa was depressed after separating from her husband. When it comes down to it, I actually genuinely felt bad for Marnie. Ladies, who among you hasn't been in her situation before where you think you're dating someone or exclusive with them and find out they have like five side pieces? Or that they just aren't ready for a relationship?

Shoshanna is falling in love with Ray as we know from the dinner party from hell. Ray is kinda depressed and definitely lost. I think Shosh was just trying to help him. She loves him but she does want those dates with the mood lighting. The whole bonding scene between Ray and Adam was really a trip.

First of all, Adam is crazy. Let's just say it, the guy is nuts. He stole a dog, he's angry, and he's still in love with Hannah. He got so defensive when Ray was trying to bond with him by doing that whole "yeah man you're ex did you wrong and sucks" thing and Adam per usual said he was "out." Poor Ray was stuck on Staten Island getting screamed at by some trashy pig while trying to return a really hyper Cujo dog.

At least he was semi impressed and supportive of Hannah's e-book. I wonder what's she's going to write about and if she's going to be able to complete it!

Usually when people say they wanna be a writer they really don't do anything except, ya know, eat and masturbate. | permalink

So do you think Hannah will complete the book? Did you feel bad when Ray was crying? Will Marnie and Hannah ever be truly close best friends again? Hit the comments!
