Girls Review: Country Strong

It was time for a road trip on this week's Girls. However, don't get too excited: "Video Games" was a little bit of a depressing episode.

Okay, it was A LOT depressing and it ended with one of our girls on the run again.

Jessa and Father

Jessa took Hannah on a trip upstate this week to confront her massive Daddy Issues. Jessa was cranky and bitchy from the moment her absentee father was late to pick the girls up from the train station. All Hannah did was agree to come with her. Sheesh!

It's not lame that it bothers Hannah that Jessa's father is late to pick them up. Considering all the crap Hannah goes through that weekend, she is a pretty damn good friend and not so selfish for once. For instance: almost dying in the car while everyone was doing whippits, getting stranded in like 10 different places, and then eating a rabbit that she had been petting five minutes earlier was an awful assortment of activities.

I can tell you right now, Mitchell from Modern Family would not have been down with that rabbit situation, even if he was psyched to see the hilarious Rosanna Arquette. He specifically told Cam about going to Missouri I don't wanna meet anything on Monday that I'm gonna eat on Friday. Hannah didn't get that memo until she saw the physical rabbit carcass on her plate.

I feel like Jessa went to the worst possible place she could go to get over her failed marriage. She loved Thomas John. I finally feel like I understood Jessa and how she loves in this episode. You see why she is the way she is, what makes her tick. Why would she visit the man who instilled all the crappy issues she has with males and abandonment in her life? I guess in a way she needed to confront everything. However, all it led to was her taking off again and leaving Hannah to navigate her way back to Manhattan.

By the way, Hannah and the UTI business...gross. I'm not a gynecologist but maybe washing your underwear and not wearing the grodiest undergarments would help with a bacterial situation. Also having sex in a graveyard with a creepy dude was probably not in anyone's best interest.

And I'm starving because all you have to eat in your house is your pet rabbit and I'm an undiagnosed hypoglycemic. Then we come into this graveyard and I feel like we're in Hocus Pocus and Thora Birch is gonna come and wear her little hat. | permalink

While there were definitely some funny moments in this episode and some good lines, it was overall a depressing installment. Will you miss Jessa? Will she be back? Would you parents think you were nuts if you called them the way Hannah did? Mine might. Hit the comments!

Girls Sneak Peeks: Where is Jessa?!?

Girls airs a new episode this Sunday, as Hannah's parents come to town and she's forced to pretend like all is going very well with her e-book.

But that awkward situation is not the focus of either of the following clips.

In the first, we see Adam approached by an older woman... who simply cannot get over how tall and adorable Hannah's wacky ex-boyfriend is. Watch his hilarious reaction to her advances now:

In the second clip from Girls Season 2, Shoshanna absolutely cracks us up by first worrying about Jessa, and then about Marnie after breaking some news to her about Ray. We can't get enough of this one:

After a couple of lackluster episodes of Girls, "It's Back" finally felt like we were back on track with the show we know and love.

With Jessa on the lamb, the rest of the girls pick back up with their lives in NYC. Shoshanna is super worried about Jessa's whereabouts, but also mostly about what her outfits are.

Hannah at Dinner

Marnie, on the other hand, isn't concerned about Jessa's location. This is what Jessa does. Truthfully, Jemima Kirke was just very pregnant at the end of shooting and probably needed to be written out for a hot minute.

Back to Marnie: why would she be concerned if it's not about her? That's Marnie's M.O. The second Charlie's name and newfound success came up, Marnie ditched Ray and Shosh faster than she could say "bye." That's the thing about Marnie, whatever is the best for her and improves her status is what she's all about. It's part of why she dated that arrogant little gnome Booth Jonathan. For some reason she gets off on the idea that she messed Charlie up.

I feel like she only opened up to Ray because he's probably in a worst position than she is. As much of a slacker as Ray is, he's whip smart. A little too smart for his own good. Probably smart enough to pick up on Shoshanna's little makeout with the doorman. You know she's going to be guilty about that one!

The reveal that Hannah had OCD is one of the reasons that I feel like people relate to Girls. Something that struck a cord for me was the fight between Hannah and her parents when they said they didn't understand why she had anxiety because she was raised well and she explained it's genetic and internal. This is something I personally understand, but Hannah has a really interesting dynamic with her parents. The session with the therapist was a trip.

I guess it's classic to have to masturbate 8 to 16 times a night until your legs shake and you're crying and you're trying to make sure your parents didn't hear you so you check their door 8 times. | permalink

Not gonna lie, sometimes she is just off her rocker entertaining. Love it. Adam's date with Shiri Appleby was also so true to life. Who the hell is relaxed on a date? Surely not this girl!

What did you all think of this week's episode of Girls? Do you think it was a good comeback?

Girls Review: Relapse

The overall theme of Girls centers on the trials and tribulations that come with growing up in the boomerang generation.

"On All Fours" featured perhaps some of the strongest examples of just how difficult it can be for these kids to make personal changes.

Whether it's Hannah's stress pushing her to regress to OCD behavior, Shoshanna's inability to face the truth or Adam's huge trail of self-destruction, the latest episode of Girls really showed us the meaning of "one step forward, two steps back."

Running Into Adam

There was a brief exchange in the opening scene with Adam and Natalia (Shiri Appleby) that really said a lot to me.

Adam: I like how clear you are with me.

Natalia: What other way is there to be? | permalink

It's an odd breath of fresh air for Adam to have someone be direct and normal with him. In fact, it's an oddity among most of my generation. With all the gray areas of "are we really together" and "do you really like me" instances, it would be nice if someone could just spell things out for a change. For Adam this is a new and healthy experience that unfortunately unraveled after a two minute run-in with his crazy ex.

Obviously the most overt instance of a relapse on this week's episode was Adam going back to the bottle and then completely freaking out his new girlfriend by degrading her in the bedroom. Natalia thought Adam was this sweet attentive guy, but suddenly he had her on all fours crawling to his bed and then ejaculating on her chest without permission. Sorry, but there is just no pretty way of writing that!

So why did Adam do it? He had a healthy seeming relationship with a nice girl and he threw it all away because seeing Hannah freaked him out that much. Since I'm not sure exactly where I stand on the whole Adam/Hannah issue I will defer to my best friend and her very strong opinions on Girls. She thinks Adam and Hannah are "dementedly perfect for each other." They are the "Carrie and Big" of this show. Any longtime fan of Sex and the City knows just how destructive Carrie and Big were, even if they ended up together.

So is that the lesson here? Something that may seem healthy and good from the outside may still not be the right choice for us? Maybe we all need to find our own little soul mate freak? Hannah has definitely never hid her neuroses from Adam. She came right out and told him about the Q-Tip, even if she failed to mention what led to it. He can tell she's not doing too well. Sorry, Hannah, but nobody, especially not your editor, is buying that your book writing is going great.

Meanwhile, you have Marnie's own version of her journey. I think it's fine she's pursuing singing, but she could've gone to an open mic night or some other appropriate venue. It's typical self-focused Marnie behavior to perform a rousingly awkward version of Kanye West's "Stronger" in the middle of her ex-boyfriend's office party. Despite that humiliating instance and Charlie's admonishing speech they ended up having pretty steamy sex on top of his desk. I have to agree with Shosh on this one: Charlie has really never looked hotter!

By the way Shosh, you held a doorman's hand? That's just one of the worst lies I've ever heard; not just because the audience saw you hook up with him, but it is a terrible cover story. Held his hand? Really?!? I think it's time to face Ray and what is really bothering her.

All the self-destructive behavior in the latest episode of Girls should make for an incredibly interesting finale. What did you think of the latest installment? Hit the comments!

Uh-oh.

"Together" utterly confused me. Let me begin by saying that I think I am one of the biggest fans of Girls out there. I relate so strongly to this series and the episode.

Girls Season 2 Finale Pic

It's clear I'm disappointed and a bit disillusioned by the Girls Season 2 finale.

I'm sure part of tonight's episode was to try and be the inverse of last year's finale. This time last year, Hannah was having her cake and eating it on the beach alone. This year she's being rescued by the man who previously couldn't get away from her fast enough.

Last year, Adam was hit by a vehicle. This year he narrowly missed being hit. Last year, Marnie and Charlie were broken up. This year, they can't wait to build their future and she's having sex at his place for a change.

Last year, Shoshanna was having sex for the first time with Ray, a man she really enjoyed being around. This year, she's telling him to get out of her and get out of her apartment.

Which reminds me: I did love something. Ray's distinction to Shoshanna about negativity versus critical thinking made me wonder about the fine line between cynicism and just a generally terrible attitude. Is it better to avoid negatively altogether? Because Ray's cynicism is what makes him... him. Although it certainly has held him back for a number of years. I digress.

So now everything is flipped. And Hannah is a total wreck. With a terrible haircut. I'm not sure where this is going to leave us for Season 3, but I know I'll definitely be tuning in. Because as much as tonight's finale was cliche and tied up in too neat a bow, I still respect this series and everything it stands for.

Til next season.

Christopher Abbott has left Girls.

The actor, who played Marnie's on-again/off-again boyfriend Charlie for two seasons - and who was most definitely on again with the beauty to close Girls Season 2 - has reportedly departed the HBO series due to differences with creator Lena Dunham.

Charlie and Marnie

“[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show,” the actor’s rep toldThe New York Post.

The fallout took place during production of Season 3, the newspaper reports, with a source on set saying Abbott didn't like the "direction" of his character.

It's unclear at this time just how Charlie will be written out.

Jennifer Westfeldt has landed a role on Girls Season 3.

HBO made the announcement today, though the network did not include any details on just what role the actress/writer (Friends with Kids, Childrens Hospital) would take on.

According to Entertainment Tonight, however, Westfeldt was spotted on on set alongside Lena Dunham and Adam Driver, filming what appeared to be a funeral scene.

The network is yet to release a premiere date for Girls Season 3, but major changes were forced to be made after Christopher Abbott suddenly departed the series as Charlie.

Girls has added a new boy.

Michael Zegan - most recently seen on Boardwalk Empire as Bugsy Siegl - has joined the Season 3 cast of this HBO hit, though details on his character are unknown at this time.

In light of Christopher Abbott suddenly departing the series as Charlie, however, it's safe to assume Zegan may become some kind of love interest for Alison Williams' Marnie.

The actor has also appeared on episodes of The Walking Dead, Rescue Me and How To Make It In America.

Girls, meanwhile, will return to HBO in early 2014.

There was some serious drama between Adam and Hanna on Girls Season 2 Episode 2. To wit: the latter accidentally called 911 on the former. Oops!

Elsewhere, George wasn't exactly thrilled about Elijah and Marnie's escapades on Girls Season 2 Episode 1, while Hannah's ex and her ex-BFF argued about whether or not to spill their sex-related beans.

Elijah wants to do so. Marnie definitely does not. Who would you say is in the right?

Shoshanna and Ray, meanwhile, are doing just fine, thank you very much. They cracked us up with a chat about bathing a pig and are the only healthy couple on the series at the moment.

Talk about a totally trippy episode of Girls.

On this installment of the HBO comedy, Elijah came out and told Hannah what happened between him and Marnie, while Hannah finally got herself a paid writing gig.

It involved taking cocaine and writing about it. Which led to some crazy, hilarious antics, along with some outlandish fashion.

Hannah danced. She cried. She exchanged shirts with Elijah in the middle of the dance floor. It was nearly enough to make us wanna try to drug for one night only.

Hannah, meanwhile, hosted a diner party that led to all kinds of trouble, particularly for Marnie and Shoshanna.

Was it a surprise that Jessa and Thomas John would hit a stumbling block in their marriage? No. But that didn't make it any less painful to watch. What an epic fight between these two!

Hannah played house on Girls Season 2 Episode 5, to unexpected and very naked consequences.

She met an older man played by Patrick Wilson.

She ended up inside his very impressive residence. And the two had a great deal of sex for a weekend, despite Hannah's initial fear that Wilson's Joshua could place her "in a Ted Bundy situation."

Instead, it simply placed her in his bed for a two-day fling, one that ended with an emotional Hannah once again feeling rejected.

Where, oh where, is Jessa?

That was the main question posed throughout Girls Season 2 Episode 8, especially by Shoshanna, who was very concerned about her good friend's whereabouts.

Marnie didn't seem to care much, though, as she was preoccupied with Charlie and his newfound success.

Hannah, meanwhile, was forced to sit through dinner with her parents, a meal made uncomfortable when the topic of Hannah's OCD became fodder for mom and dad.
