Girls Review: A Grandmother Goodbye

$

Ah, we have finally gotten to the "Hannah only" installment of the season.

Girls Season 3 Episode 9 took Hannah to her ill grandmother's bedside to say goodbye.

The Hospital Visit

As brilliant as I think Lena Dunham is, I am not sure that airing this episode against the Oscars was the best idea. However, it felt real and relatable, which isn't always the case when it comes to Girls. Who hasn't dealt with the impending death of an elder loved one?

Who also hasn't dealt with all the extremely awkward side work that comes with the impending death of someone sick or elderly within their family? I'll admit I've seen people dole out prescriptions that were not theirs. I've also seen some gross arguing over who gets what in the will.

People can be vultures and Hannah's mother and aunts were no different.

I've noted before that Hannah is generally in a better and more mentally upbeat place in Girls season 3. I mean, look how she took her grandmother's comment and her weight issues in stride.

Grandma Flo: Wow you look nice, what did you do?
Hannah: Oh I gained 15 pounds.

Hannah is a straightforward chick. Her aunts were annoying her shortly after they greeted each other. Hannah makes no apologies for who she is; that includes the time she told her cousin that her father was going to jail for insider trading and she'd never see him again. And sorry she's not sorry because it was true.

Rebecca, played by Sarah Steele of The To Do List  (awesome movie) and aforementioned cousin, was not down with any of Hannah's humor.

She was not amused by her Grey's Anatomy joke, nor the fact that Hannah is excited to have a personal doctor on call whom she can text with questions at all hours of the day. Not going to lie, Hannah and I totally share totally share that dream.

Hannah rightfully called Rebecca out on her blatant rudeness. Why would she invite her to drinks if she disliked her? Though, to be honest, would you rather be around the three crazy sisters or the rude cousin? Tough call. R

ebecca seems like she has a great head on her shoulders (not). She has a boyfriend for one day a week because he has other girlfriends on other days and she is the worst texting driver I've ever seen. My 16-year-old niece with a permit is a better driver than Rebecca.

Interesting how the aunts thought Rebecca was the good influence when Hannah was the one who has actually been non-neurotic and kind of chill for once.

She even went along with her mom Lorraine's crazy idea of saying that she and Adam were engaged to make Grandma happy. Of course, Grandma kind of scared her off with saying she'd want to murder her husband at times, but still.

What confused me was this: Why would Lorriane push Hannah to do that, only to turn around and tell her that she didn't think Adam was right for her? Adam, for all his quirks and awkwardness, had probably been the best thing for Hannah we've seen in awhile.

He's odd, he's angry, he's uncomfortable in his own skin.

Lorraine [about Adam]

So, what do you guys think? Does Hannah belong with Adam?

Well, all the other Broadway veterans (and Elijah) predicted that this would happen.

In Girls Season 3 Episode 10, Adam officially became more interested in the play than in Hannah. But did she push him too far?

Girls Gathering

I think we can all agree that Hannah Horvath is a self-focused person and always has been. Back in Girls Season 3 Episode 8 - when Adam first got the part - everyone including Patti LuPone, was warning Hannah that Adam would change.

He's gonna need you to support him and forgive him, because he's gonna be an asshole.

Patti Lupone

It started out innocently enough, but Hannah does not handle change well. She got wasted with work friends and Adam didn't even seem worried that she never came home. Okay yes, that's odd. Then he didn't want to have sex on the couch because he was focused on rehearsing.

This is his first big role, I can see that he'd want to focus and be prepared. That part wasn't a big deal.

Adam invited Hannah to rehearsal and then let the director kick her out without any sort of objection. Cue the ex boyfriend and current gay BFF Elijah. I don't know why they were in bed eating burritos wearing bandanas but I loved it all the same. Elijah suggested Hannah give Adam a reminder of how good things used to be.

The thing is, I don't even think Adam felt like anything was wrong. He finally got a job that he felt passionate about and he wanted to focus on it.

Hannah needs 100% of his attention 100% of the time and that's just not realistic in any relationship. The whole role-play thing was so awkward, weird and painful to watch that I physically cringed by my third viewing for this review.

This isn't even about the hideous pairing of weird lingerie with granny panties, but the fact that it was so darn uncomfortable on both parties. To be fair, this is what Hannah thought Adam would want. They had a kinky sex life since Girls Season 1.

So that is not Hannah's fault that she read things incorrectly. She's just being so needy.

Adam, on the other hand, didn't need to be so harsh on her. He could've explained that, yeah, he used to have weird kinky sex and treat girls that way because he was a different person then. Now they are in love and the sex is different and better because of that.

Also, when did he decide to stay with Ray? Clearly he's been thinking about leaving Hannah before this incident happened.

I have a job to do now. I have to focus and I'm not here to fill up your life with fucking stories for your fucking twitter!

Adam

So was Adam too harsh or is Hannah too needy? Team Hannah or Team Adam? Vote below and then sound off in the comments.

As opening night approaches for Major Barbara, Adam needs space to focus.

Unfortunately, Hannah isn't supportive of that space and it causes some problems on Girls Season 3 Episode 11.

Marnie at Work

I'm not sure what it is that Hannah's having a bigger problem with. On one hand, I think she is just super attached to Adam and upset he needs space. On the other hand, I think it's the fact that Adam has something important and exciting going on in his life and she doesn't.

Hannah has this very intense fear of being a sell out. She thinks that her job at GQ doing advertorial means that she can't be a "serious writer." That fear slight abated in Girls Season 3 Episode 8 when she got her first GQ paycheck.

In fact, I don't really remember her missing Adam all that much when she was super busy with her new job.

Shoshanna, and all of her whacky notions, actually nailed it right on the head. Hannah was supposed to be the breakout star of the group and now it seems like she's just a regular ol' person.

I mean like Adam's about to be on Broadway, Marnie's clearly about to be a pop star, and I don't know, you were supposed to be the famous artist in this group and now you're just working in advertising.

Shoshanna

Hannah was worried about this before the episode even started and the trip to Patti LuPone's was no help. First of all, Elijah was definitely stealing the show with him looking like a "f**king Kennedy" and all.

Then she saw the cautionary tale of Patti's husband when he talked about giving up his writing career to be a small-bit professor and support Patti.

Then with Adam's theater friends, you could tell what an outcast she felt like. By the way, playing Major Barbara herself is none other than Jenny Mollen, the hilarious wife of American Pie's Jason Biggs.

Hannah was just not born to sit out of the spotlight. Can she and Adam find common ground and each thrive in their own careers? It seems like everybody is just trying to find their footing in Girls season 3. Shoshanna is thrilled to be graduating. Jessa is now trying to keep sober. And Marnie is finally giving the singing thing a go.

Marnie is another one that can't really deal when the attention isn't on her. She clearly wants to bang the guy she is working with and Clementine is not going to stand in her way.

When he couldn't deliver the attention she needed, she found herself at Ray's door again. Does Marnie have no regard for other women? I know Ray and Shosh are over, but screwing your friend's ex is still a basic no-no in Friendship 101.

So now that Hannah walked in on Ray and Marnie having sex, is she going to rat to Shosh? Vote below and sound off with your thoughts on this week's episode in the comments!

Girls Review: Big Breaks, Heartaches

Well, this year's season finale was quite different from that of Girls season 2

Last year concluded with men kind of rescuing the ladies, which some argued was not really the normal message behind GirlsGirls Season 3 Episode 12 was about the satisfaction of doing something for yourself.

Well at least, for Hannah it was.

Sharing Secrets

Unbeknownst to all of us, Hannah applied to graduate school in Iowa for a writer's program. She got in and felt a mix of apprehension and excitement.

Of course, Hannah would worry about something like finding a new place to get yogurt, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't worry about really dumb things sometimes. (Okay, all of the time.)

To get all psychological about it, Hannah was thinking of dumb excuses and reasons to not go. She's comfortable with her life in Brooklyn. She's settled with Adam and her friends and a lot of your 20s is about trying to be comfortable. But it's also about chasing your dreams and getting what you want out of life.

We have to hand to to Lorraine Horvath on setting Hannah straight on what an opportunity Iowa is. Ultimately, it was Hannah's choice, but you could sense the excitement brewing underneath her doubts. So something really amazing happened to Hannah (yay!) and then she turned around and did something typically selfish and Hannah-like.

There was no purpose in telling Adam something that might upset him right before his first Broadway performance.

I get why Hannah thought it was a great moment to let him know how inspired she felt by him to get creative, but she should have left it at that. Adam moved out for a few weeks just to get some space. Logically, how would he respond to news like that right before his show?

Hannah: I know that this is complicated, but I also know that we can work it out.
Adam: Well I'm sick of trying to work it out. Can't one thing ever be easy with you?

As self-focused as Hannah is a lot of the time, I'm also a little sick of her having to walk on eggshells around Adam. Relationships take work and effort. Why is it okay for Adam to chase his dreams and not Hannah?

On to the other three girls: Jessa's story of assisted suicide was so weirdly irrelevant that I don't have much to say about it.

I can't believe Shosh is not graduating! Between that and Marnie's news about Ray, I'm surprised all she did was pounce on Marnie. Oh Marnie, what are we going to do with you?

Plainly said, Marnie is incredibly insecure. She is stunning, she's getting her art career back on track, she has friends, but without a man Marnie is just not okay. She has been off of her game since Charlie dumped her.

Remember how sick of him she was in Girls season 1? She has this need to validate herself by sleeping with guys who are inappropriate.

If you're here to tell me what a bad person I am, I don't wanna hear it. Seriously I know. And no I have not told Shoshanna yet but I will and I fucking know I have to do it. And I know that I need to have more respect for the emotional property of other women and I know that I use sex for validation because it's what I do.

Marnie

This whole finale was kind of like everyone realizing what they really wanted (except for Jessa). Maybe I'm missing how her storyline fit in? I don't know, feel free to theorize in the comments. Elijah was a delight, as always. Him sneaking in with the cast photos cracked me up.

What a random cameo to see Caroline! I know I was kind of wondering if Adam ever found her after Hannah kicked her out Girls Season 3 Episode 5. She is pregnant with Laird's baby and that's weird and equally funny.

Okay, so how would you rate the Girls season 3 finale?

In this fun look at Girls Season 4, we witness Hannah taking the next step (in a series of random steps, as Adam points out) by moving to Iowa for the Writer's Workshop, an invitation that closed out Girls Season 3.

Suddenly, Hannah is bike riding, noshing on grapes as a snack, in the throes of a kiddie pool mud wrestling at a house party and generally sticking out like a sore thumb!

It looks like there's a lot going on with the other girls, too.

While Hannah and Adam try to keep it together long distance, Marnie is still hanging with rocker dude Desi, and yes, he still has a girlfriend. That doesn't stop people from wondering how long Marnie and Desi have been a couple!

Soshanna is swimming unhappily in the pool of candidates searching for employment while discovering she's off putting and without style. The real world is hard, you guys!

The trailer also features Jessa delivering one heck of a bitch slap to Hannah and getting arrested with Adam.

Are you squealing in excitement over the promise of Girls Season 4? The fun starts on Jan. 11.

These series should be canceled.

Yes, that's what some of your favorite TV Fanatics think. These shows stink – utterly and absolutely.

Glee
Oh, Glee. After so much promise in the early episodes, I found myself tuning out after the midseason break. I returned many times. Probably due to the promotion from Fox. The show seems to have so many big ideas, that are so full of promise and then they just get ditched for more buzzworthy ones. Glee is the definition of a half baked idea. I cringed when it got the two-season renewal. There are so many shows that are creatively better that deserved a two-year renewal. It looks like the shows luck has run out as it's about to premiere its final season. Goodbye. -- Paul Dailly

Girls Season 4 Episode 1 Review: Iowa

Girls Season 4 Episode 1 opened up with scene that directly mirrored Girls Season 1 Episode 1 with Hannah and her parents at dinner.

Three seasons ago, the discussion was more about the Horvaths cutting Hannah off. This time it was congratulating her for taking the next step in her life. Although Adam, despite his tardiness, may have put it most eloquently:

To Hannah, taking her next step through a series of random steps.

Adam
Hannah's Goodbye Dinner - Girls Season 4 Episode 1

As we witnessed in Girls season 3 Episode 12, Hannah was accepted to a writing program she had applied to secretly a long time ago. Adam wasn't exactly pleased she was about to uproot her life when things had just started going well for him.

It looks like Adam's play has actually been a springboard for a bit of a career. He now has an agent who also represents an actor from the wildly popular The Walking DeadHe may have to take jobs like depression commercials, but hey, that's all a part of starting out, right?

I'm glad it seems like he is going to support Hannah's move after all. During Girls Season 3 it seemed like this could lead to a break up. Although does long distance ever really work? Eh.

Jessa isn't pleased with her best friend's decision to moving halfway across the country after Hannah dragged Jessa home from rehab. How about that great cameo by Natasha Lyonne as Jessa's employer's daughter?

You're pussying out on this whole thing. The thing that we're all trying to do which is make it work regardless of location, right where we are.

Jessa [to Hannah]

It seems like with the growing popularity of Girls, more and more people want to guest star. We also got a glimpse of Ana Gasteyer as Shosh's mother. It's now clear where Shosh gets her neurotic tendencies!

It was great to check in with everyone as Hannah prepared to leave for Iowa. Rita Wilson was back as Marnie's mother. Marnie is still doing music, but cried when kids heckled her. My favorite cast member Elijah was entertaining as he attempted to comfort Marnie. He also always adds some flavor to the drama in general.

Marnie this business is not for sissy bitches.

Elijah [to Marnie]

Let's all just take a moment to acknowledge how delusional Marnie is being about Desi. We were treated to a graphic little sex scene that left Desi saying "I love THAT" and Marnie responding "I love you too." Oy Marn. Come on. Affairs are not cute on anyone. Don't pretend you heard it wrong!

It was great to see her back in her best friend element, though, as she showed up at Hannah's apartment at 6 AM to help her pack. That was typical Type A Marnie and I loved it.

Next up, we are finally off to Iowa!

Do you think Hannah will make it through her program?

Girls Season 4 Episode 2 Review: Triggering

$

Girls Season 4 Episode 2 started off depressing in the same way one might feel being in a new, foreign, lonely place.

Hey mommy can I ask you a question? Is it normal when you get to a new place to think about suicide for the first time ever?

Hannah

Hannah officially arrived in Iowa for the Writers' Workshop and despite some definite positives (cheap real estate) it is still a hard adjustment.

Feedback - Girls

Every season of Girls has an episode that focuses solely on Hannah. In prior years it was her visiting her family and the random affair she experienced with Patrick Wilson. I'm not sure if this was that episode, especially so early in the season, but it was definitely Hannah-centric.

Things started off well in Iowa. Hannah found out she could buy a nice sized house for less than she would spend on a tiny studio in New York City. Everyone she met seemed pretty friendly and she was told she didn't even have to lock up her bike.

Slowly things began to fall apart and you could tell it was triggering Hannah's internal issues, making her question her decision to enroll in the program. She broke her cell phone, someone ended up stealing her bike, there was a bat in her new house, and she got some awkward feedback in her first class.

It was obvious to viewers that Hannah was writing about herself in a fictional manner. However, it was also obvious to her fellow classmates and they weren't fans about it.

Student 1: The main character is a girl with a lot of tattoos named Anna.
Student 2: Who needs to eat every 2 hours or she passes out.

One of the girls in the class made a good point to Hannah afterwards at the bar that you have to have a thicker skin to be a writer. You can't go to everyone's house who reads your work and defend your point. You have to become comfortable with criticism; a very hard lesson.

Despite the downer parts of "Triggering," which felt relatable to anyone who has ever been in a new place and felt really out of place, there were some equally awesome moments that I really enjoyed.

I'd be remiss not to mention how hilarious and ridiculous it was that Shoshanna couldn't figure out how to answer a collect call. I am only a few years older than these girls but those few years were when cell phones really became commonplace. I remember using pay phones and calling collect for many years.

Also, it is so obvious you write for a television website when you can automatically identify what Shosh and Jessa were watching just by hearing dialogue. Hello Scandal!!! That was some intense Huck and Quinn stuff, am I right gals?

Elijah's arrival was, without a doubt, the best part of this installment. I said in my review of Girls Season 4 Episode 1 that Elijah can spice up any boring situation.

On the way here from the airport, two people asked me if I was Blake Lively's husband. Iowa is awesome!

Elijah

Seeing the two of them let loose and cut a rug at the party felt like a breath of fresh air. It was also pretty reminiscent of Girls Season 2 Episode 3 when Hannah and Elijah did a ton of coke at Greenhouse and she wore that infamous yellow top.

Hey, sometimes you just need one of your best friends!

Girls Season 4 Episode 3 Review: Female Author

$

0

We established after last weeks episode of Girls that Elijah can pretty much make any situation more fun.

In Girls Season 4 Episode 3 it's evident that his charm only helped Hannah out of her Iowa funk temporarily. The truth is that it's not really anything Elijah's doing, it's just typical Hannah behavior.

Jessa's World - Girls

With only one class a week, Hannah isn't thriving in her workshop. She claims she is in a "pre-writing" mode, which is ridiculous considering writing is the whole reason she is there. She asks all of her friends back home about Adam. Meanwhile, we find out that in order to set boundaries they have agreed to only speak once a month.

Elijah, on the other hand, is thriving in Iowa because that's his personality. He's made friends, has an active social life, has taken up photography, and is overall pretty happy.

I just realized I got so good at taking selfies, I wasn't feeling challenged anymore.

Elijah

Hannah has a moment of being fed up with the judgmental nature of the other people in her group and gets offensively candid with everyone. It seems she doesn't enjoy being pigeonholed as the "Fifty Shades of Grey" girl.

Your whole story is like a winky face emoji followed by a poop emoji.

Hannah

The scene where Hannah rips apart every single member of her writing group individually, kind of felt like she was speaking to her real life critics, in a way. If you've read articles that interview Lena Dunham, she has a very strong and opinionated voice.

In her rant she makes the following points:

  • There's nothing wrong with popular writing. There's no need to be so judgmental.
  • In writing history, people are overly accepting of sexual stories written by men. (Hence the episode title "Female Author")
  • It is easy to pigeonhole anyone, if you are a big enough ass to do it.
  • You don't have to be miserable just to tell a good story. It's okay to be happy and cheery. It doesn't mean you should be taken less seriously.

Basically, the whole world seems to have an opinion on Lena Dunham because she puts herself out there in an unapologetic way. And guess what? She's sick of backlash. Things have gotten so controversial that she has now hired the real life Olivia Pope

This episode and this scene in particular, felt very meta.

Outside of Iowa, the world on Girls progressed as usual. Jessa and Adam attended AA and then Jessa got arrested for public urination. Not shocking. Their friendship, however, surprised me in a good way. It feels natural. I think Adam is the first person I've seen Jessa drop her guard of BS around and say that she actually just needs more friends.

Marnie tries to make excuses for her pathetic scene of a relationship with Desi. She doesn't believe she is the mistress because he makes her look him in the eye as they orgasm, he touches her butt at Starbucks, they text goodnight, and she met his cousin. Also, he can't break up with his girlfriend because he's afraid to upset her health issue.

Marnie: I am not the mistress.
Ray: You are 1000 percent the mistress.
Marnie: Not if I end up with him.

This is the classic case of what so many 20-something girls are walking around NY spouting. They are making excuses for dates who booty call them, guys who treat them less than they deserve, and overall plain He's Just Not That Into You scenarios. I would know, I've been there.

Poor Ray, poor overlooked Ray, is the good guy who is upfront with Marnie and tells her not to settle for less. Granted it wasn't cool that he slept with his ex's friend last season, but Shosh is over it and we've moved forward. Marnie, and girls everywhere who are making excuses for behavior, need to stand up for what they want and accept nothing less.

Crap, I think Lena's whole message must've gotten to me in the end. I've found myself passionately reviewing an episode of television, something I don't often get very heated about. I guess that's the whole big deal about Lena. She gets you talking!

Girls Season 4 Episode 4 Review: Cubbies

Well hello Gillian Jacobs!

Before we talk about the awesome guest star who appeared at the end of Girls Season 4 Episode 4, I'm going to try and figure out what "Cubbies" was even about.

Hannah's Class - Girls

After every insgtallmet of Girls I try to figure out what the common thread or theme to what I just watched. Even though it isn't always obvious and this show isn't structured like that, there is generally some common seed to be found.

I think on this week, it all comes back to what Hannah's father said.

"Sometimes the stupidest decisions are also the right decisions."

Tad is always an interesting character. I mean, remember when he pulled his back out banging her mom in the shower on Girls Season 1? Tad is not a sideline man. When he is onscreen, he's there for a reason. His visit to Hannah, from my perspective, was to tell her that it was OK if Iowa wasn't for her. It might seem like quitting to other people, but sometimes a decision just isn't the right one for you.

Hannah has been having doubts for weeks and I'm fairly certain that many viewers probably placed bets on how soon she would return to New York. So who had episode 4?

I think you should talk to the rest of the class, because they put me in a box and now I'm suffocating.

Hannah

I'm not surprised she returned. I was a bit surprised to see Gillian Jacobs answer the door! The Community guest star seemed to possibly be a roommate at first, but remember when Jessa asked Adam about some girl in Girls Season 4 Episode 3? I'm kind of shocked at how fast Adam moved on!

Last week, Elijah and Hannah had some banter about how Hannah acts when she gets what she wants. Sometimes what you think you want, isn't really what you want.

Take Marnie, for instance. Desi finally broke up with Clementine. She was thrilled and emotional at first, but didn't she look a bit turned off and stressed as the conversation continued? Did Desi really pull the trigger or was it Clementine? Was it really for Marnie or is she the back up?

After much rejection in the "real world," poor Shosh ends up finding some solace while running errands with Ray. It felt like there was a real moment of clarity there. Also Shosh totally belongs in retail, doesn't she? That brutally honest yet concise opinion could be what ends up finding her a job!

Shoshanna: I just don't understand why nobody tells you how bad its gonna be in the real world.
Marnie: Yeah they do. It's pretty much all they tell you.

It's the time of week when we share with you all the quotes our writers have rounded up as their favorites.

If you haven't been watching Togetherness on HBO, the quote will give you a little of the intimacy problems the couples experience on the show.

Spencer doesn't think Hanna is necessarily doing her part on Pretty Little Liars and Louis gets a bit confused about the possibility of riding in the car with patient zero on Suits.

That's just a part of the fun, and if you want to see it all, you need only flip through the slideshow to see the rest of the story!

Girls Season 4 Episode 5 Review: Sit-In

Dealing with an ex finding someone new can be an excruciating process and I found that Lena Dunham played it pretty well on Girls Season 4 Episode 5.

From the immature angry moments to the touching sentimental conversation she had with Adam, Hannah went through the various reactions to her breakup that we often see in real life.

The State of Their Relationship - Girls

So, given the fact that Hannah is a bit of an immature and outrageous person (I mean she did just up and quit her renowned writers program in Girls Season 4 Episode 4), none of her actions in this episode were shocking. In fact, it was pretty much on point with what I would expect from her.

Hannah isn't outright mean enough to cut down Mimi Rose. Instead she would basically not acknowledge her unless it was a quick snap, i.e., no she doesn't want a juice. Adam is wise enough to get MRH out of there ASAP.

Instead Hannah retreated to her former room like a petulant child. She locked the door, only allowing for her three best friends to break through the fortress. Interestingly enough, they all play three very different, but essential, roles in helping your best friend through a breakup.

Shoshanna is the enabler best friend who will comfort you until you can't have one more cup of tea or glass of wine. She will have every episode of Sex and the City on DVD. Shosh will take to social media and find out every detail about the new girlfriend, but also know when to cut you off from seeing it.

Um we need to find out every possible details about this rando hussy immediately.

Shoshanna

Then you have a Jessa, the friend who will cut you with the truth. She pulls no punches and will not tiptoe around your feelings. Taking it one step further, Jessa is actually the one who set up Adam and MRH! While I understand that Adam shouldn't have had to wait around for her for two years, I also would never set up my best friend's ex with someone new. Awkward.

You said you were leaving for 2 years! What were we supposed to do? Sit around flicking our clits till you got back?

Jessa

Lastly, we have Marnie. Despite her selfish nature, she is the best of both worlds. She will come in speaking in a soft voice and be comforting, yet still firm. She will bring you food, but also gently break whatever needs to be said. Marnie will tell you the hard truth you already know, but don't want to admit.

In this case, that would be: it's time to let go of Adam.

Letting go doesn't come very naturally to me.

Hannah

Once Hannah got all of her dramatic antics out of the way (did she really need to pee in the bucket?) she and Adam were able to have the break-up conversation that, frankly, not a lot of people even get these days. Honestly, I almost found myself in tears. They were so open and honest, but still emotionally touching. I felt for them BOTH in that scene.

Here's hoping that Hannah really has learned more about herself after Iowa. Maybe it will help her move forward and get through this next step post-Adam. One thing is for sure: you will get through it with your friends.
